Steven Brown (Tuxedomoon)

Maison Rosé

Information

Steven Brown, founder of Tuxedomoon, returns to Italy to present his new solo album "In This Very World", out in April on Crammed Disc. The concert also includes forays into the repertoire of the historic San Francisco band and songs from his previous solo albums. Steven Brown (Tuxedomoon) – vocals, electric piano, sax, clarinet, tape. Luc van Lieshout (Tuxedomoon) – trumpet, harmonica. Lucien Fraipont (Aksak Maboul) – guitar. Born in Chicago, Steven Brown moved to San Francisco in the mid-1970s, where he joined the theatrical group The Angels Of Light before forming Tuxedomoon with Blaine L. Reininger in 1977. The group recorded two albums for The Residents' Ralph Records label, before leaving the toxic atmosphere of Ronald Reagan's America and moving to Europe, settling in Brussels for more than a decade. From the beginning, Tuxedomoon incorporated visual arts into their theatrical performances, transcending post punk, new wave and alternative rock, electronics, avant-garde and jazz; minimal, classical and gypsy music with their unique and unparalleled sound. All this quickly made Tuxedomoon one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Meanwhile, Steven Brown was also developing a solo career. In addition to 15 albums with Tuxedomoon, he has recorded more than 20 albums in his own name (including collaborations with Reininger and Benjamin Lew) or with groups he formed after moving to Mexico in 1993: Nine Rain, Ensemble Kafka, Cinema Domingo Orchestra. Steven regularly composes music for film, theater and dance, for example for Wim Wenders, Patrice Chéreau, Maurice Béjart and Thierry Smits. With Nine Rain he was commissioned to compose the music for the Mexican pavilion at the 2000 world exposition, and furthermore Nine Rain received the Mexico En Escena scholarship for creating the soundtrack to Sergei Eisenstein's unfinished silent film ¡Que Viva Mexico! (1930), which the group later performed live with the film in Europe and also in Eisenstein's Russian homeland. Finally, in a collaborative work between Tuxedomoon and Cult With No Name, Steven Brown essentially contributed to the soundtrack of Blue Velvet Revisited (2015), a documentary about the making of David Lynch's classic film, Blue Velvet. Coming out in April 2026 is the new solo album "In This Very World" featuring poetic songs and evocative instrumental pieces, between experimental jazz and neoclassical forms. The album features a reinterpretation of a Shostakovich work and "Panic in Detroit" by Bowie. With "In This Very World" Steven Brown reaffirms his vocation as a poetic singer-songwriter, timeless yet deeply rooted and active in his musical, political and geographical journey. LIVE: Steven Brown (Tuxedomoon) with Luc van Lieshout (Tuxedomoon) & Lucien Fraipont (Aksak Maboul)
