ARTISTYo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo formed in 1984 around singer and guitarist Kaplan and drummer and vocalist Georgia Hubley. After several early lineup changes, bassist James McNew became a permanent member for May I Sing with Me (1992). The band released Ride the Tiger in 1986, New Wave Hot Dogs in 1987, and President Yo La Tengo in 1989. Fakebook (1990) combines acoustic interpretations with original songs, while Painful (1993) expanded the group’s sonic range. It was followed by Electr-O-Pura (1995) and I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One (1997). And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out appeared in 2000, followed in 2002 by The Sounds of the Sounds of Science, a soundtrack to Jean Painlevé’s underwater documentaries.
Later releases include Summer Sun (2003), I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass (2006), Popular Songs (2009), Fade (2013), and Stuff Like That There (2015). The band released the 2009 covers album Fuckbook under the name Condo Fucks. For There's a Riot Going On (2018), the members produced and recorded the album in their rehearsal space; they recorded, produced, and mixed This Stupid World themselves in 2023. In 2020, they released We Have Amnesia Sometimes and the EP Sleepless Night. Yo La Tengo also made music for the film Old Joy with guitarist Smokey Hormel and recorded a cover of "Who Has Seen the Wind?" with David Byrne for Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono.
