ARTISTSun Kil Moon
Sun Kil Moon is the project through which singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek returned to recording after Red House Painters ended. Its debut, Ghosts of the Great Highway, was released in 2003 and continued the earlier band’s musical direction. Admiral Fell Promises followed in 2010, then Among the Leaves in 2012, as Kozelek’s writing became more direct, literal, and at times humorous. Released in 2014, Benji was among the most popular and acclaimed works of his career. Later, Universal Themes and collaborations with Jesu continued his diary-like, self-referential approach to songwriting.
The first Sun Kil Moon lineup brought Kozelek together with former Red House Painters member Anthony Koutsos, Geoff Stanfield, and Tim Mooney. Subsequent releases include April, featuring guest vocals by Will Oldham and Ben Gibbard; the double album Common as Light and Love Are Red Valleys of Blood; This Is My Dinner; and I Also Want to Die in New Orleans. Released in 2019, the latter features contributions from drummer Jim White and saxophonist Donny McCaslin. The project has also released two collaborations with Jesu: Jesu/Sun Kil Moon and 30 Seconds to the Decline of Planet Earth.
