Shenandoah is an Alabama country group formed in Muscle Shoals in 1984 by Jim Seales and Mike McGuire, with Ralph Ezell and Stan Thorn. After singer Marty Raybon joined, the band began performing as the MGM Band and later adopted the name Shenandoah. They rose to popularity in the late 1980s: their 1989 album The Road Not Taken became their most successful release and produced six country Top Ten singles. Songs that reached the top of the charts include “The Church on Cumberland Road,” “Sunday in the South,” “Two Dozen Roses,” and “Next to You, Next to Me.”
Following lineup changes and a break, Shenandoah re-formed in 2000 and continued recording and performing. Their 1994 duet with Alison Krauss, “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart,” earned the group a Grammy Award and a Country Music Association Award. Raybon returned as lead singer in 2014; the lineup released Good News Travels Fast in 2016 and the live album Reloaded in 2018. The 2020 release Every Road features duets with Luke Bryan, Zac Brown Band, and Lady A, among others. In 2023, Shenandoah released “Revival” and recorded “Two Dozen Roses” with Luke Combs.
