ARTISTSeu Jorge
Seu Jorge, born Jorge Mario da Silva on June 8, 1970, grew up in the poor communities of Rio de Janeiro and took on various odd jobs. During compulsory military service, he played cornet in a Brazilian army band. After meeting Gabriel Moura at his brother’s funeral in 1991, following his brother’s killing by Rio police, he began teaching himself guitar. In 1993, he was hired as an actor and musician by the Tuerj theatre troupe and appeared in close to two dozen productions. He left in 1996 to lead Farofa Carioca.
In 1999, Seu Jorge left Farofa Carioca to pursue a solo career and worked with Mario Caldato on Samba Esporte Fino. He played Knockout Ned in City of God in 2002 and, two years later, appeared as Pelé Dos Santos in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He recorded fourteen songs for the latter film; they were collected on The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions, released in 2005. His subsequent releases include Cru (2004), América Brasil: O Disco (2008), and Seu Jorge and Almaz (2010).
