ARTISTFiction Plane
Fiction Plane is a British alternative pop/rock band fronted by singer and songwriter Joe Sumner. The group began to build a following in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. It started in 1999 under the name Santa’s Boyfriend; later, former art student Seton Daunt joined as lead guitarist. Sumner began learning guitar at ten and also learned drums. In 1991, after hearing Nirvana’s Nevermind, he began writing songs. He later played with bassist Dan Brown, who shared his interest in Nirvana and went on to become a member of the band.
In 2001, Fiction Plane recorded the demo Swings and Roundabouts. After signing with MCA and changing its name to Fiction Plane, the group made its first official album, Everything Will Never Be OK, produced by David Kahne in 2002. As the band did not have a full-time drummer during the recording, session musician Abe Laboriel Jr. played on the album. Sumner and Brown later hired American drummer Paul Wilhoit to tour with them. MCA released Everything Will Never Be OK in the United States in March 2003. Sumner is Sting’s son, but the band did not seek to foreground that connection.
