ARTISTDr. Alban
Dr. Alban became one of the most recognizable faces of the 1990s Euro-dance scene, with a style influenced by dancehall. Born into a middle-class Nigerian family of ten children, he moved to Stockholm, Sweden, at 23 to study dentistry. To support his studies, he began working as a DJ and quickly drew notice for singing in a reggae style over the records he played. After graduating, he combined his medical work with DJing for a time. He later met producer Denniz Pop, who signed him to his SweMix label.
He adopted the name Dr. Alban as a reference to his dentistry background and released his debut album, Hello Afrika, in late 1990. The title track and “No Coke” became million-selling European hits in 1991. His second album, One Love, followed in 1992: its title track was a sizable hit, while “It’s My Life” and “Sing Hallelujah” each sold more than a million copies, strengthening his standing in Euro-dance. His third album, Look Who’s Talking, came out in 1994, and its title track became another major hit across Europe. He has since released Born in Africa, Prescription, I Believe, and Back to Basics.
