ARTISTCobra Starship
Cobra Starship began in New York in 2005 as a solo project of Gabe Saporta, singer and bassist, following the end of his punk-pop band Midtown. While reconsidering his next steps in Arizona, Saporta started writing songs shaped by his interest in hip-hop, dance music, and synthy emo-pop. One of the tracks he posted online was «Hollaback Boy», a satirical take on Gwen Stefani’s «Hollaback Girl». It drew the attention of Fall Out Boy members Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz, and Cobra Starship signed to Decaydance, an imprint associated with Fueled by Ramen.
The group gained wider notice in 2006 with «Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)», featuring guest vocals from Maja Ivarsson, Travis McCoy, and William Beckett. The song was connected with the film Snakes on a Plane and led the band’s debut album, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets, released in October 2006. The Patrick Stump-produced ¡Viva la Cobra! followed in 2007. Hot Mess, released in 2009, reached number four on the Billboard 200 and included «Good Girls Gone Bad», featuring Leighton Meester. Night Shades arrived in 2011 with «You Make Me Feel...», featuring Sabi. After the 2014 single «Never Been in Love», Cobra Starship disbanded in 2015, and Saporta moved into artist management. In 2021, the previously unreleased tracks «Beautiful Life» and «Party with You» appeared as part of Fueled by Ramen’s 25th anniversary.
