ARTISTBenny The Butcher
Benny The Butcher is part of Buffalo’s Griselda crew and is associated with Black Soprano Family, the two main outlets for his tense narratives about street life. His influences include hardcore hip-hop from the mid-1990s in his home state, including Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb Deep. Jeremie Pennick knew by the age of ten that he wanted to be involved in music. In the late 2000s, he released material as B.E.N.N.Y., including the full-length projects The Mayor's Back and Chains Bond. He later formed a long-term alliance with Westside Gunn and Conway in the group Forerunners, which also included his brother, Machine Gun Black, and contributed to the growth of Griselda Records.
After My First Brick (2016) and Butcher on Steroids (2017), Tana Talk 3, released in 2018 and produced by Alchemist and Daringer, brought him greater acclaim. The Plugs I Met followed in 2019, featuring Black Thought, Jadakiss, and Pusha T; that year, he also signed a management deal with Roc Nation. Burden of Proof, made with Hit-Boy, arrived in 2020, followed in 2021 by The Plugs I Met 2, Trust the Sopranos, and Pyrex Picasso. In 2022, he released Tana Talk 4, preceded by “Johnny P's Caddy” with J. Cole. Everybody Can't Go, his first album for Def Jam, appeared in 2024. Later releases associated with Black Soprano Family include Excelsior and Summertime Butch 2 in 2025, Big Slow Fest with OG Ron C in 2026, and Ashes in the Safe, released in April.
