Launch party for Cordelia Gartside's new single 'What the Heart Wants' with support from Djank and Bugbear. Drawing on influences like Radiohead and Fiona Apple, Cordelia Gartside is building a lo-fi alt-rock world. Her songs carry the tension of a Lynch scene: the quiet, then the collapse. Live, her band builds atmosphere out of reverb, distortion and groaning guitars. Gartside's voice cuts through it, or breaks inside it. Her sharp lyrics and hypnotic delivery make the quiet as arresting as the noise. FFO: Mitski, Big Thief, Radiohead, Fiona Apple. Djank is the amalgamation of all of the kitschy antiques your grandparents hoarded and all of the beers you stole in high school. Formed into a big mess of heavy guitars, four part harmonies, DIY videos, and lo-fi cassette loops, Djank takes inspiration from folk, midwest emo, 90s pop, and whatever records or snippets of audio they find in charity shops and on Internet Archive. Bugbear is the 'emotronic' brainchild of Daisy Kane and Ivo Winkley. Drawing on elements of post-rock, electronic music and 2000s indie, their songs are home to strange and surreal characters... the most notable being Penelope, their homemade papier mache goblin.
