Boldy James, nome d’arte di James Clay Jones III, è nato ad Atlanta ed è cresciuto a Detroit, città d’origine dei suoi genitori. Ha scelto il proprio nome in omaggio all’amico Boldy, ucciso. Cugino di Chuck Inglish, rapper e produttore membro dei Cool Kids, è apparso nei mixtape del gruppo prima di pubblicare Trapper's Alley: Pros and Cons nel 2011. Nel 2012 sono seguiti Consignment: Favor for a Favor, The Redi-Rock Mixtape e l’EP Grand Quarters; nel 2013 è uscito My 1st Chemistry Set, il suo album di debutto prodotto da The Alchemist. Nel 2014 è diventato uno dei primi artisti messi sotto contratto da Mass Appeal Records. Per l’etichetta ha pubblicato, tra gli altri, Trapper's Alley 2: Risk vs. Reward, The Art of Rock Climbing e House of Blues. Nel 2018 è passato all’attività indipendente con Live at the Roxy (Tabs & Caps).

Boldy James ha collaborato più volte con The Alchemist, tra cui per Boldface, The Price of Tea in China, Bo Jackson e Super Tecmo Bo. Nel 2020 ha pubblicato anche Manger on McNichols, realizzato con Sterling Toles, The Versace Tape e Real Bad Boldy, con Real Bad Man. Le uscite del 2022 comprendono Killing Nothing, Fair Exchange No Robbery con Nicholas Craven, Mr. Ten08 con Futurewave e Be That as It May con Cuns. Nel 2023 sono arrivati Indiana Jones con RichGains e l’EP Prisoner of Circumstance con ChanHays. Nel 2024 ha pubblicato Penalty of Leadership con Craven e Across the Tracks, prodotto da Conductor Williams, seguito da The Bricktionary. Tra le uscite del 2025 figurano Permanent Ink, Token of Appreciation con Chuck Strangers, Alphabet Highway con V Don, Conversational Pieces con Real Bad Man, Late to My Own Funeral e Criminally Attached con Craven. Ha inoltre pubblicato lavori con Rome Streetz, Your Boy Posca e info56.
